An exceptional early electric Edwardian self-righting gimbal wall lamp, probably made by Richard Perry, Sons & Co., London. The lamp bears a partial registered design number stamped into the brass, which dates the design to July 1909.
These lamps, which use pivots and a heavy brass counterweight built into the design to maintain an upright position on sea-faring ships, were used extensively across Royal Navy yachts and White Star Line ocean liners - a near-identical model was brought up from the Titanic and sold in New York in 2012.
Here, it is paired with an elegant glass shade bearing an unfussy design of lines, olive cuts and pillow-like shapes against an acid-etch ground.
The pivot of the lamp can be set tight enough so that it can function as an attractive adjustable desk or table lamp.
The lamp has been dismantled, cleaned, with new electrical parts that blend in with the old but meet modern safety standards. It accepts a B22 bayonet bulb, and comes with a very generous length of Italian-made cable in a vintage style with a decorative mottled grey linen braid.
