A large and scarce pair of sculptural handmade wrought iron andirons, presented in the shape of horses. Made in Spain in the 1950s of thereabouts, they blend contemporary brutalist styling with a faint mediaeval fashion; a popular combination in Spanish metalwork of the era, especially lighting.
Can be used as fire dogs, as intended, but stylish enough to be stand-alone sculptures on a sideboard or deep mantelpiece.
Both bear their original black paint, with a time-worn feel.
1950s Midcentury Abstract / Brutalist Wrought Iron Horse Andirons / Fire Dogs
Condition
Generally excellent. Some wear to the original paint, and some light rusting, both of which add to the charm and authenticity. The two horses have been cleaned and have had an application of museum grade microcrystalline wax to stabilise the rust and finish, making them ready to place.
