A relatively scarce and decorative Victorian ironstone china jar or pot for Batty’s Patented Mustard with under-glaze black transfer decoration and text, with applied ‘handles’ to either side. The mustard was made by London firm, Batty & Co. (later acquired by Heinz as their entry into the British market), and dates to some time after 1852 and before the close of the 19th Century.
The jar reads, alongside the royal warrant:
Batty’s Patented Mustard – Prepared at their wholesale and export pickle warehouse – Finsbury Pavement – London.
The jar is marked ‘C.W.’ to the base, but we’ve been unable to find the manufacturer the stamp belonged to.

Condition
The jar appears to have been excavated, and is richly ‘patinated’ with the signs of age you’d expect to find from a century or more of burial; fine crazing and discolouration, a stable crack to the rim, a firing crack to the base from manufacture, and small surface wear.
