An unusual and characterful table lamp in the well-observed form of a tulip, with an elongated stem and two fronds, painted green, and a flower head, which functions as a cup for the lamp-holder, painted to look like a variegated red and yellow flower; much prized during the Dutch ‘tulipomania’ of the 17th Century. The stepped base is made of a dark hardwood with a teak-coloured varnish finish.
The lamp’s old ½” BSB threads for the lamp-holder indicate British-made, and the different-sized screws on the underside of the wooden base suggest it is the output of a man-in-a-shed, arguably the UK’s most inventive post-war manufacturer of novelty goods. Probably dates to the 1960s.
The lamp has a solid brass switched lamp-holder and has been rewired with a generous length of period-style 3-core twisted cable with a dark brown silk braid.
The lamp accepts a single B22 bayonet bulb. It comes fitted with a UK 3-pin plug. International buyers should be able to readily and inexpensively source plug adaptors for their local sockets.
