An original vintage 1969 East German cinema poster for Anselmo Duarte's 1961 Palm D'Or-winning film, The Given Word (O Pagador de Promessas), with graphics by renowned German poster artist and illustrator, Heinz Handschick (1931-2022). The poster was designed for the East German market, via Progress Film-Verleih, the country's sole film distributor during the communist era. Rather than paying for the expensive rights to international posters, Progress commissioned artists to create entirely new posters and allowed broad artistic freedom (and usually great artistic licence when depicting the film's contents). As such, these unique film posters of the DDR period are incrasingly collected. These poster were folded from manufacture as standard.
