A highly unusual, original museum poster for 'Ils ont des chapeaux ronds...' (They have round hats...), a 1989 exhibition of the clothes and costume of lower Brittany, designed by esteemed French poster artist, Alain Le Quernec (1944-).
It is unusual in that the centre of the poster has a die-cut round hole where the costume wearer's face would be. Presumably it was originally displayed with a mirrored backing, or suspended in a completely transparent frame to allow people to pose behind, as with traditional seaside amusements. The hole allows for some creative framing ideas in a domestic setting.
The poster is otherwise bold, graphic, and engaging, as you'd expect from Le Quernec. The exhibition title amusingly derives from the lyrics of Vive la Bretagne, a traditional bawdy tavern song.
