A large ecclesiastical brutalist crucifix sculpture made of solid cast bronze, titled "Auferstehung / Ascension Jesu" (“Resurrection / Ascension of Jesus”), created in the 1970s by German artist and sculptor, Joseph Krautwald (1914-2003).

It bears an inscription from the liturgy of the Eucharist:

“Deinen Tod o Herr verkünden wir. Deine Auferstehung preisen wir, bist Du kommst in Herrlichkeit.”

(“We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.”)

Krautwald trained initially as a stonemason, then attended the wood carving school in Bad Warmbrunn with Cirillo Dell'Antonio and the sculpture class of Josef Thorak at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He completed his training in 1939 with Karl Albiker in Dresden. He established his Rheine studio in 1951, and worked predominantly in sacred art, designing churches, chapels and gravestones throughout Germany, especially in the diocese of Münster and in north-west Germany.

The sculpture has an indent to the verso for hanging on a wall hook.
