An antique plafonnier lamp of moulded pink opalescent glass with a stylised, almost art deco, ‘rose’ design, with original chromed bronze ceiling rose and suspension rods. It was made in the early 1920s by French lighting firm, Roba, Paris.
The nature of opalescent glass means that the thickness of the glass affects how translucent it is, and how much light can transmit through it, which gives a variegated look to the shade when it is lit, with the thickly-cast roses retaining a more solid appearance whilst the background foliage gently disperses the downwards light. The moulding is beautifully cast, retaining crisp sculptural lines and lots of detail.
The lamp has been dismantled, cleaned and brought up to modern safety standards with brand new vintage-style twisted 3-core cable with a period-correct brown silk braided sheath, and completed with a new British-made patinated solid brass lamp holder. The ceiling rose fixes to the ceiling on a bélière suspension.
The lamp accepts a single B22 bayonet cap bulb.
Signed ‘Roba Paris’ in the moulding.

Condition
Small wear to the glass, as you’d expect, but no chips or cracks, and displays perfectly. Some rubbing to the chrome plating, especially the decorative finials on the underside of the shade, which are almost entirely exposed bronze from a century of cleaning. Clean and ready to install.
