A handmade flatweave kilim wall rug made in the small village of Harrania, south of Cairo. Dating from around the 1960s and showing a rural scene of houses, minarets, palm trees, grazing goats and camels. There is beautiful variation in the colours, from the wools that were dyed by hand on-site. Harrania has been famed since the 1950s for the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre and its artistic weaving workshops run for children. It started as an educational experiment - giving the child training in weaving technique, free reign over their designs, and ownership of their work - and became a cultural success, with international exhibitions of their pieces being held since (The British Museum held an exhibition of Harranian tapestries in 2006, and hold several in their permanant collection).
